I am very proficient in MS Paint but I needed a particular kind of fill within a shape the other day and tried GIMP. I had downloaded it but not used it. Now I am hooked. It takes a moment to realize there are layers in the diagram but you can edit and move text after adding it, do gradient fills within a shape and all sorts of other cool effects.
The best thing of all it is Open Source! I love GIMP. www.gimp.org
